The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's commencement website required a complete overhaul to better serve its key audiences—students, faculty, and families attending the event.

Our goals were to modernize the design, improve usability across devices, and mitigate questions posed to our special events team.

process

I was one of two designers working on this site. My focus was on adding engaging and functional components to the homepage. I independently worked with our developers to ensure the flip clock and horizontal scroller were accessible. We designed this entire site with responsiveness in mind.

Original components

Countdown Clock:

Our university has two commencement ceremonies. The initial design would account for both ceremonies.

I removed one countdown, opting for a cleaner look and featuring the coming ceremony's date.

I adjusted the background colors to ensure white text was always accessible and legible.

This is the final iteration that is live on the site.

Horizontal Image Scroller:

We added a play/pause toggle and set the default state to “paused” to support accessibility for users who prefer reduced motion.
